Bathroom Remodel for Seniors: Safety, Comfort & Accessibility

The bathroom is where most falls in the home happen. It is also the easiest room to make safer without making it look like a hospital.

Accessible bathroom with grab bars and a curbless shower

More accidents happen in the bathroom than in any other room in the house, and the risk rises sharply with age. It is also the room where a few well-chosen decisions make the largest difference.

Start with the threshold

Stepping over the lip of a tub or a shower tray is the single most dangerous movement in a bathroom. A curbless shower removes it entirely. Add a transfer seat and the whole sequence of getting in, washing and getting out can be done seated.

Grab bars, properly installed

A grab bar is only as good as what it is fixed to. It needs solid blocking behind the wall, which means deciding where the bars go while the wall is open rather than screwing them into tile afterwards and hoping.

Floors, taps and light

Anti-slip flooring, a handheld showerhead, lever taps rather than knobs, and considerably more light than a younger household would specify. Contrast helps too: a floor that reads clearly against the wall makes the edges of the room easier to judge.

It does not have to look institutional

This is the objection we hear most, and it is out of date. Modern grab bars come in the same finishes as your towel rails. A curbless shower reads as a design choice, not a medical one. Both owners of this company hold the Certified Aging-In-Place designation from the National Association of Home Builders, and the point of that training is exactly this: making a home work for the long term without announcing it.
